What "fully live" usually means to parents
Parents usually mean most of the academic day is a live class with a teacher on screen. That can help a child who loses the thread the minute the camera goes off. It can also mean a packed calendar with fewer quiet blocks to practice until something sticks.
A longer live calendar and a shorter live block plus guided practice can cover a school day of similar length. What matters is who teaches the core subjects, whether the peer group is stable, and what happens when the child is stuck between explanations.

What live core + guided practice means
In this model, live humans still lead math, English, science, and history with a real group. After the lesson, students practice on purpose. Help is available when they get stuck, so practice stays inside the school day.
That shape can look lighter on live hours in a brochure and still fill a weekday once community time, electives, and projects are on the calendar. Recess's day detail is on Is Recess a full school day?.
How to compare the two day shapes
| Question | Fully live | Live core + guided practice |
|---|---|---|
| What "live" usually means | Most academic minutes are synchronous class | Live humans teach core subjects with a stable group |
| Where practice sits | Fewer quiet practice blocks, by design | Practice is scheduled inside the school day, with help when a child is stuck |
| A full day or a few hours | Ask; some programs are live all day, some are a short live block | Ask; live lessons plus practice, community, and electives can still be a full weekday |
| Who this tends to fit | A child who needs an adult setting the pace almost every minute | A child who can work after a clear lesson when help is nearby |
- How many hours each week are live subject classes, and how many are practice?
- Is "live" mostly subject teaching, or an open room with optional help?
- Is there a stable peer group for core academics?
- Who helps when the child is stuck during practice: a teacher, a coach, an AI tutor, or a parent?
- Are you buying a full school day or a few live hours?
- Who issues transcripts, and how does enrollment work in your state?
- What grades are covered end to end?

Recess Academy (live + practice)
At Recess, people run the school day. Every school morning, math, English, science, and history are taught live in one morning learning pod, 9 to 10 AM Pacific: the same small group of kids with the same Recess adult. That pod is the core academic cohort. Units have explicit mastery criteria, so a child moves forward when they have shown they understand the material.
After live work, students practice in Studio with help when they get stuck. Recess's AI tutor, Rocky, guides and motivates during that practice and can walk through a stuck step. The AI tutor is one tool inside Studio. People lead the morning learning pod, the community hour, and the electives. How that pairing works is in AI tutors with live teachers.
The rest of the published day includes a community hour from 12 to 1 PM Pacific, interest-led live electives with mentors, and project Challenges that build toward a portfolio. Each student picks three electives, and each meets live once a week, mostly in the afternoon. The week runs Monday through Friday, roughly 9 AM to 5 PM Pacific, across a 180-day school year. Grades are 2 through 10.
Enrollment in the Recess school is open for Arizona families. Families in other states access Recess through an accredited partner school in the Recess school network, which issues transcripts, or through Recess's online learning program, where homeschool requirements stay with the family. Recess is a member of Cognia and is independently pursuing Cognia accreditation. Recess students tested on NWEA MAP Growth in 2025-26 scored at a median of the 89th percentile in math and the 91st in reading. Comparing grade-level averages with NWEA's 2025 school achievement norms places Recess in the top 1% of U.S. schools on MAP achievement (footnote on the school homepage). In states Recess serves with ESA or similar aid, your award counts toward tuition first, and we work with you to bring your out-of-pocket cost down. Many families pay $0. See tuition.
Best for: Families who want live small-group teaching for core academics, then structured practice with help, inside a full weekday.
Tradeoff: Grades 2-10 only. Live times are part of the day, and Studio practice is part of the day too, so families who want software they can open at any hour, or wall-to-wall live seats, are shopping a different shape. Outside Arizona, the enrollment path (partner school or online learning program) affects transcripts.

Fully live models parents hear about
On live-teacher shopping prompts, parents often see Unbound Academy, Score Academy Online, and TCS framed as heavily live or fully synchronous. Treat those names as leads to verify. Re-check each school's current site for how many hours are live subject teaching, what grades they serve, whether practice is built into the day, and who issues transcripts. Schedules and prices belong on those sites. The live teachers guide is the place for teacher-led school versus curriculum software.
Best for: Families who want nearly continuous live class time and can confirm on the school's own site that those hours are real subject teaching.
Tradeoff: Wall-to-wall live calendars vary by school. Confirm day length, whether the peer group stays stable, and what happens when a child needs quiet practice time.
When fully live fits better
A fully live-leaning model fits when a child loses focus the moment a class ends, or when the household cannot support practice blocks without another adult in the room. Ask for a sample weekly schedule before you enroll.
Best for: Kids who need an adult setting the pace for almost every academic minute.
Tradeoff: Quieter blocks for mastery are fewer unless the school still schedules them on purpose.
When live + practice fits better
Live core plus guided practice fits when a child can work after a clear lesson with help nearby, and you want that mastery practice inside the school day. That is the Recess shape above.
If you are also shopping programs that pair an AI tutor with live teachers, see Online school with an AI tutor and live teachers.
Best for: Families who want live teaching and structured practice in one weekday.
Tradeoff: Practice time works when help is real at the moment the child is stuck.

- Is the day a full school weekday or a few live sessions?
- Who issues transcripts in your state?
- What grades are covered, and what happens after the top grade?
