What the AI tutor does at Recess
Rocky is Recess Academy's AI tutor. Its job is to guide and motivate kids while they practice. In Studio, the independent practice that follows live classes, the AI tutor gives a step-by-step explanation when a student gets stuck.
Everything else stays with people: live teaching, community hour, electives, and the school records. AI help can be wrong, so a Recess adult is still there when a child is stuck, upset, or looking at an explanation that doesn't make sense.
When your child is with a live adult
Core academics happen in the morning learning pod: live math, English, science, and history with the same small group and the same Recess adult, every school morning. Each unit has mastery criteria.
Studio practice comes after the live work. Each live session ends with a short practice set the child can open when they're ready, and the AI tutor helps with any step they get stuck on. Community hour runs 12 to 1 PM in a supervised live room for friends, games, and shared projects. Electives are interest-led, taught by mentors, and mostly in the afternoon, and each student takes three, each meeting live once a week.
The week is Monday through Friday, roughly 9 AM to 5 PM Pacific, across a 180-day school year. The full schedule is on the school home and academics, and Is Recess a full school day? covers what the full-time program includes.
Recess serves grades 2 through 10. Enrollment in the Recess school is open for Arizona families. Families in other states access Recess through an accredited partner school in the Recess school network, which issues transcripts, or through Recess's online learning program, where homeschool requirements stay with the family. Recess is a member of Cognia and is independently pursuing Cognia accreditation. Paths are on how enrollment works. Tuition and aid are on the tuition page.
Best for: Families who want live small-group teaching and a daily community hour, with an AI tutor for practice inside that day.
Tradeoff: Grades 2-10 only, and your child needs to be online for scheduled live classes. If you just want an AI app without a school day around it, Recess is more than you need.
How the AI tutor and live teachers divide the work
| Moment | Who leads | What the AI tutor does |
|---|---|---|
| Morning learning pod (core academics) | A Recess adult, live with the same small group | Available for guidance when a student needs it |
| Studio practice | The child, with a person available if they stay stuck | Guides, motivates, and walks through a stuck step |
| Community hour, 12 to 1 PM | Peers, in a supervised live room | Nothing. The hour is for friends, games, and shared projects |
| Electives | Mentors | Nothing. Mentors teach the class |
Why parents ask whether AI replaces teachers
Search for "AI school" and you'll mostly find a software-led morning: about two hours of adaptive academics, then workshops. Alpha School describes that model, and Unbound Academy, a tuition-free Arizona online charter, uses a similar two-hour academic block. Parents who have already tried a curriculum app often worry their child will spend the day alone on a laptop.
An AI tutor app helps with homework while your child's current school runs the day. A school runs the whole day itself. AI tutor online schools for kids goes into that difference.
How this compares with AI-first schools
Software-led models. Alpha School's campuses use a short adaptive block for core academics, often described as about two hours, then workshops with staff Alpha calls guides. Alpha's FAQ says Alpha Anywhere, the at-home version, has enrollment paused through the end of 2026. Unbound Academy serves Arizona residents in grades 4-8, with core academics in about two focused hours and teachers on screen.
Best for: Families who want a short adaptive academic block and more of the day in workshops.
Tradeoff: Less live subject teaching in the core block. Remote options are limited, since Alpha Anywhere is paused through the end of 2026. Fuller comparisons are in AI online schools and AI tutor online schools.
Live teaching with AI practice help. At Recess, core subjects are live in the morning pod, and the AI tutor helps in Studio.
Best for: Families who want daily live small-group core subjects and AI help while the child practices.
Tradeoff: More of the day is on the live schedule. Grades 2-10.
When an AI tutor app is enough
Khanmigo is Khan Academy's AI tutor for homework and classwork. Synthesis Tutor is a math tutor app for ages 5 to 11. Your child stays enrolled in their current school.
Best for: Practice help when a school, a schedule, and friends are already in place.
Tradeoff: You still own the curriculum, the calendar, the records, and the social time. How an app differs from a school is in the AI tutor guide.
Questions to ask any program that pairs AI with a school
- How many hours a week are live with a person in core subjects?
- Does the AI give hints, or a finished answer?
- Who steps in when the child is stuck, upset, or trying to get the AI to do the work?
- Is there a stable peer group and a daily live community, or is social time optional?
- Is this a full school day, or an AI tutor added onto homework?
- Who issues transcripts, and how does enrollment work in my state?
