What an online school with live teachers means
"Live" (educators also say synchronous) means a scheduled session where a real adult is teaching and classmates are there at the same time.
Self-paced curriculum software is lessons, videos, and quizzes on the child's own clock. A teacher might answer email or a help ticket, but the parent usually runs the day.
Hybrids sit in between, with live core classes followed by independent practice. "Online school" on a homepage can mean any of these, so ask which one you're getting.

Why parents ask for live teachers
Many families look for live teachers after a stretch on a curriculum login that turned the parent into the full-time teacher. They want a school day with a schedule, a person who can help the moment a child gets stuck, and other kids in the room. Loneliness is a common complaint after months of software-only school. "Open the laptop whenever" works well for some families, but it's a poor match for a child who needs the day to start with people.
What a live day at Recess includes
Recess is a full-time online school for grades 2 through 10.
Core academics happen in the morning learning pod: live math, English, science, and history with the same small group and the same Recess adult, every school morning. Units run on mastery, so a student moves forward after showing they understand the material and loops back when something hasn't stuck yet.
After the live work comes Studio practice, a short practice set the child opens when they're ready. If they get stuck on a step, tutoring help is built in. That tutor is Rocky, Recess's AI tutor. People lead the live classes, community hour, and electives.
From 12 to 1 PM every day there's community hour, a supervised live room where kids hang out, play games, and work on projects together. Electives are separate from core academics. Each student picks three, taught live by mentors once a week, mostly in the afternoon.

Arizona families can enroll in the Recess school now. Elsewhere, kids join through an accredited partner school in the Recess school network, which issues transcripts, or through Recess's online learning program, where the family keeps its state's homeschool requirements. Best for: Families who want live small-group teaching, a daily community hour, and mentor-led electives in one school day.
Tradeoff: Grades 2-10 only, and your child has to be online for scheduled live classes. If you want software your child can open at any hour, Recess isn't built for that. Outside Arizona, who issues the transcript depends on your enrollment path.
When self-paced curriculum fits better
Time4Learning is an online homeschool curriculum. Its site describes video lessons and activities across core subjects, a parent planner for scheduling, and preschool through 12th grade. Time4Learning's FAQ says curriculum programs do not carry accreditation for homeschool use, and that the parent issues the diploma.
Acellus Academy describes itself as an accredited online private school for grades K-12 (WASC). Parents create an account, choose courses, and students can start from a login at home. Acellus also says a family can use it as the primary school or for individual courses while a child is enrolled somewhere else.
Best for: Independent learners, and families who need to set the clock themselves or assemble their own day.
Tradeoff: The parent usually carries more of the teaching and the daily plan, and there's less built-in time with other kids. It's also easy to confuse access to a curriculum with enrollment in a school, so ask who issues the transcript before you sign up.
How live are virtual public schools?
Large virtual public schools, including Connections Academy and K12 / Stride programs, often mix live sessions with asynchronous work. Connections Academy asks a parent or another adult to act as Learning Coach: structuring the day, monitoring attendance, and helping with the work. That load is heavier in the younger grades.
A program can advertise live classes and still be mostly independent work with a parent coaching at home. Ask how many hours a week are live before you assume a full live day. - Are those classes a small group, or mostly recordings and tickets?

- Am I buying a full school day, or access to a curriculum?
- What is the parent's job on a normal Tuesday?
