AI online school usually means one of three things: a full online school day with live teachers and an AI tutor for practice, a campus school built around adaptive software, or an online program marketed as AI-first. Recess is a full-time online school for grades 2-10 with live small-group teachers, a daily pod, and Rocky, its AI tutor, inside Studio practice. Alpha School is the name parents hear most for AI-powered learning, and its main model is in person. Alpha's FAQ says Alpha Anywhere enrollment is paused through the end of 2026. Other options include Khan World School at ASU Prep for grades 6-12 and, in Arizona, the tuition-free charter Unbound Academy for grades 4-8.

What people mean by an AI online school

The phrase gets used for several quite different schools. Two questions sort them out: will your child be home or on a campus, and is the AI one tool inside the school day or the main thing the school is selling?

Recess

Grades 2-10 · Full online school day · AI tutor inside a human-led day

Recess teachers and staff lead the school day. Every school morning, math, English, science, and history are taught live in a small learning pod with the same kids and the same Recess adult, and each unit has explicit mastery criteria. Afternoons include live electives, each meeting weekly, and project challenges. Community hour is a supervised block with peers. The year is 180 instructional days.

Rocky, Recess's AI tutor, guides and motivates kids during independent practice in Studio. A student who gets stuck between live sessions can get step-by-step help right away. The pods, live classes, and community hour are all run by people.

Arizona families enroll in the Recess school. Families in other states access Recess through an accredited partner school in the Recess school network, which issues transcripts, or through Recess's online learning program, where homeschool requirements stay with the family. Alpha School

Alpha School is the school parents mean when they search "AI school." Students spend a short block, often described as about two hours, on adaptive software for core academics, then workshops with staff Alpha calls Guides. The flagship experience is a campus. Alpha's FAQ says Alpha School is an in-person school with a full campus experience, and that Alpha Anywhere enrollment is paused through the end of 2026.

In Arizona, the open Alpha program is Alpha Scottsdale, a K-8 private campus at 20624 N 76th St. Its campus page lists tuition of $40,000 as of September 2026. Prices differ by campus, so check the one near you.

Alpha's outcome claims come from the school's own data. Researchers quoted in Scientific American said those reports aren't designed to support firm conclusions. No independent evaluation of those claims has been published.

Best for: Families who want Alpha's campus model and can attend in person. Tradeoff: Alpha Anywhere is not an open online school while enrollment is paused through the end of 2026. The Scottsdale campus means a daily commute, and published tuition is $40,000.

Unbound Academy

Grades 4-8 · Tuition-free Arizona online charter

Unbound Academy is the tuition-free Arizona virtual charter on the two-hour model. The school says core academics run about two focused hours in the morning on a plan adjusted per student, with certified teachers on screen, then afternoon workshops, on a day of about 8 AM to 2 PM. Enrollment is for Arizona residents in grades 4-8.

For Arizona families who need a free option and are fine with a software-led morning, Unbound is the main tuition-free school on this model. It's a public charter, so ESA funds don't apply. Like Alpha's, the learning-speed claims on Unbound's site come from its own data and haven't been independently evaluated.

Best for: Arizona residents in grades 4-8 who want a tuition-free online charter with a short academic block. Tradeoff: No kindergarten through 3rd grade, and no high school. Arizona residency is required. The morning is software-led, with teachers on screen.

Khan World School at ASU Prep

Grades 6-12 · Full-time online honors · Mastery and live seminars

Khan World School at ASU Prep is a full-time online honors program for grades 6-12. ASU Prep describes mastery-based coursework, live seminars, small-group tutorials, and guides. Students have to apply. It's a separate program from ASU Prep Digital, the tuition-free K-12 Arizona online school, and the two often get mixed up: a listing that calls Khan World School "K-12" is really describing ASU Prep Digital.

Tradeoff: It starts at grade 6, and the day is built around honors seminars, which is a different rhythm from starting every morning in the same small pod. Admission is more selective than at an open-enrollment charter.

Does your child need to be fully remote every day? If so, Alpha is off the table while Alpha Anywhere is paused.
Do you want live small-group teachers running most of the day, or a software block plus guides? Recess is the first. Alpha and Unbound are closer to the second.
