AI tutor online schools for kids: what's out there and what the research says

AI tutor app or AI tutor school?

These are different things, and it's worth separating them before comparing options.

• An AI tutor app (Khanmigo, Synthesis Tutor and similar) helps with one subject or with homework. It's a supplement. Your child still needs a school, and you're still in charge of the curriculum, schedule and records.
• An AI tutor school owns the whole school day. The AI is built into a full curriculum, and the school also handles attendance, records, live teaching, social time and accountability.

If your child is happy in their current school and needs extra practice, an app may be all you need. If you're looking to replace school, you're comparing schools.

The main AI tutor school options

Alpha School and the "2 Hour Learning" model

Alpha School, founded in Austin, is the best-known AI-first school. Students spend about two hours each morning on adaptive software for core academics, then spend afternoons in workshops like public speaking and entrepreneurship run by staff Alpha calls "guides." It markets the model as "2x learning in 2 hours." Axios reported the network was growing to roughly 50 campuses for 2026-27.

Two things to know. First, Alpha's outcome claims come from its own MAP Growth data, which hasn't been independently evaluated; researchers quoted in Scientific American noted those reports aren't designed to support firm conclusions. Second, the model has drawn critical reporting. WIRED reported that most of Alpha's academic coaches in 2023-24 were remote workers abroad, and 404 Media reported on internal concerns about AI-generated lessons and student monitoring. Alpha has disputed both stories. Pennsylvania rejected the Unbound cyber charter in 2025, calling the AI model untested, while Arizona's charter board approved Unbound 4-3 in December 2024.

Khan World School at ASU Prep

A full-time online school for grades 6-12 built on mastery-based coursework and daily Socratic seminars in small groups. It sits in the Khan Academy ecosystem, and its core is the daily seminar. It doesn't serve elementary grades.

Recess and Rocky

Recess is a full-time online school for grades 2 through 10, and its AI tutor, Rocky, is one part of that day.

• Humans teach. Every school day starts in a small learning pod with the same group of kids and the same Recess adult. Math, English, science and history are taught live in small group cohorts, and each unit has explicit mastery criteria.
• Rocky helps between live sessions. Independent practice in Studio has a tutor built right into the curriculum. When a student gets stuck, at 2 PM or 9 PM, help is one message away, with a step-by-step explanation back in seconds.
• The rest of the day is people too. Afternoon electives, over 200 project challenges and a supervised daily community hour mean kids spend real time with peers and adults.
• Results are measured the same way schools measure them. Recess students took NWEA MAP Growth in 2025-26 and scored at a median of the 89th percentile in math and 91st in reading.

What the research says about AI tutors

Tutoring works, which is why AI tutoring is interesting. Benjamin Bloom's 1984 "2 sigma" study found that one-on-one tutoring with mastery learning dramatically outperformed classroom teaching. Later research found smaller but still meaningful effects: a 2020 meta-analysis of randomized trials put tutoring's effect around 0.37 standard deviations. The promise of AI is tutoring at a scale no school can staff.

Well-designed AI tutors can help. A 2025 Harvard randomized trial in college physics found that students using an AI tutor built around good teaching practice learned more in less time than students in an active-learning class. A World Bank study in Nigeria found students gained about 0.3 standard deviations after six weeks of teacher-supervised sessions with an AI assistant.

Humans in the loop is the common thread. Stanford's Tutor CoPilot trial found that AI assisting human tutors raised student mastery by 4 percentage points, and by 9 points for less experienced tutors. In a 2025 UK trial of Google's LearnLM, expert tutors reviewed the AI's messages, and students were more likely to solve new problems later.

Unrestricted AI can backfire. A 2025 study in PNAS gave high school math students open access to GPT-4. Their practice scores went up 48%, but their exam scores fell 17% once the AI was removed, because students leaned on it for answers. A version designed to give hints instead of answers largely avoided the harm.

What's missing: there is still no independent randomized trial of any full-time K-8 AI school. Treat any "2x" claim as marketing until it's independently evaluated.

What to ask any AI tutor school

1. Who are the adults? How many hours a day does my child spend with a live teacher or adult, what are their backgrounds, and how fast does a human step in when my child is stuck or upset?
2. Does the AI give answers or hints? Can it be used to do the work for my child?
3. How is my child's data handled? The FTC's updated COPPA rule has been in full effect since April 2026. Ask about parental consent, webcam or photo monitoring, whether your child's data trains AI models, and how to delete it.
4. How is mastery measured? Look for a nationally normed test like MAP Growth, and ask whether results include students who left.
5. How do kids show learning off the platform? Writing, discussion and projects prove understanding transfers.
6. Where do friendships come from? Is there a stable peer group and live time together every day?
7. How much total screen time? Count the whole day, including time outside the academic block.
8. What about records and funding? Ask about accreditation, transcripts if your child returns to a traditional school, and whether ESA funds apply.
