How the Arizona ESA program works
Arizona's Empowerment Scholarship Account (ESA) is a universal program run by the Arizona Department of Education. The state deposits education funds into a parent-controlled account, and families pay approved providers through ClassWallet. Private school tuition, including tuition at an approved online private school, is an allowed use.
A typical Arizona award is about $7,000 to $8,000, and much more when a student has a disability. Awards change every year and depend on grade and disability status. Current figures are on Arizona ESA funding.
Families usually pay an approved provider in one of three ways:
- Direct pay or marketplace: the provider is listed in the portal and your balance is debited.
- Pay an invoice: you upload the school's invoice and the portal pays the school.
- Reimbursement: you pay out of pocket, then submit receipts. Not every program allows it, and some providers rely on it.
Ask each school how its tuition payments line up with your ESA deposits. How to use ESA funds walks through marketplace, direct pay, and paying an invoice in more detail.
Arizona ESA requirements
- Eligibility. The program is open to every K-12 student in Arizona. Students who qualify with a disability receive more.
- No public enrollment at the same time. Public and charter schools, including online ones, are already funded by the state. An ESA student generally can't be enrolled in one at the same time.
- Approved providers only. Money flows only to providers approved in ClassWallet, so ask any school whether it's an approved Arizona ESA provider today.
- Apply with the state. You confirm eligibility and apply through the Arizona Department of Education ESA site, which lists the current steps and documents.
What Arizona families are choosing between
Most Arizona families looking at online school and an ESA are sorting three paths.
| Path | What families pay | Can the ESA pay it? | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private online school | Tuition. An approved provider can apply the ESA award toward it | Yes, when the school is an approved provider | Recess, Score Academy Online, self-paced vendors such as Acellus Academy |
| Tuition-free public or charter virtual | $0 for qualifying Arizona residents | Generally no. An ESA student cannot be enrolled in a public or charter school at the same time | Arizona Connections Academy, ASU Prep Digital, Arizona Virtual Academy, Primavera, Unbound Academy |
| In-person private campus | That campus publishes its own tuition | Ask the campus whether it is an approved provider | Alpha School's Scottsdale campus |
Arizona online schools side by side, from each school's own site as of September 2026:
| School | Type | Grades | Tuition | Notes |

ESA-approved online schools in Arizona
Recess
Grades 2-10 · Full online school day · Approved Arizona ESA provider
Arizona families enroll in the Recess school itself, and enrollment is open. Core academics happen in the morning learning pod: live math, English, science, and history with the same small group and the same Recess adult every school morning. Units are mastery-based. After the live work, students practice in Studio, with step-by-step help when they get stuck. People lead the live classes, the daily community hour, and the electives.
Community hour runs from 12 to 1 PM, a supervised live room for games, conversation, and projects. Electives are separate from core academics: each student picks three, taught live by mentors once a week, mostly in the afternoon, alongside project challenges. The week runs Monday through Friday, roughly 9 AM to 5 PM Pacific, across a 180-day school year. The full day is in Is Recess a full school day?, and subjects are on academics.
Recess is an approved Arizona ESA provider. Your award counts toward tuition first, and Recess works with you to bring the out-of-pocket cost down. Many families pay $0. Smaller awards still apply toward tuition, and financial aid is available for qualifying households. Price and aid are on tuition and in How much does online school cost?. Award details are on Arizona ESA funding and the Arizona ESA page.
Recess is a member of Cognia and is independently pursuing Cognia accreditation. Transcripts and enrollment paths are on how enrollment works.
Best for: Arizona families who want a full live online school day in grades 2-10, paid with ESA funds, with the same peers each morning, a daily community hour, and weekly electives.
Tradeoff: Kindergarten, 1st, 11th, and 12th grade sit outside the 2-10 range. It's a private school, so families pay tuition unless the ESA and aid cover it. Live classes meet at set times. Cognia membership is in place, and accreditation is still in progress.
Score Academy Online
Score Academy Online publishes its own Arizona ESA page. As of September 2026, that page says Score is a state-approved ESA provider, Cognia-accredited, with NCAA-approved courses, grades K-12, and ClassWallet payment. It describes three packages: live small-group classes, recorded lessons with teacher chat, and fully self-paced coursework. Pricing is per course, and the page says enrollment is rolling.
Best for: Families who need a K-12 span, NCAA or AP-track coursework, or a course load they can scale to the award.
Tradeoff: Per-course pricing means a full-time bill depends on how many courses you take, and the day changes between the live package and the self-paced package.
Other online private schools that take Arizona ESA
These schools listed Arizona among the ESA programs they accept on their own sites as of September 2026. Confirm each one is approved in ClassWallet before you enroll.
| School | Grades | Format |
|---|---|---|
| K12 Private Academy | K-12 | Online, teacher-led courses. The private sibling of Stride's free K12 public schools |
| Sora Schools | 6-12 | Live, project-based "expeditions" |
| Laurel Springs School | K-12 | Mostly self-paced, with a live option for older grades |
| Acellus Academy | K-12 | Self-paced video lessons, payable through ClassWallet |
| CMASAS (Christa McAuliffe Academy School of Arts and Sciences) | K-12 | Self-paced and mastery-based, with a weekly coach |
| Pearson Online Academy | K-12 | Online private school, the private sibling of Connections Academy. Families often pay first and submit the receipt for reimbursement |
Self-paced vendors suit independent learners and families who need to set the clock themselves. The tradeoff is less live teaching and less daily time with the same peer group, so the parent usually carries more of the schedule.
Free Arizona online public schools
These schools are public or charter programs. They're free for qualifying Arizona residents, and an ESA student generally can't be enrolled in them at the same time. Families who want a $0 public diploma path, and who will stay enrolled in public school, start here.
Arizona Connections Academy (K-12) is a tuition-free online public school for students throughout Arizona. It is authorized by the Arizona State Board for Charter Schools and operated by a nonprofit under a contract with Connections Education. The school describes Arizona-certified teachers and Cognia accreditation. Families are responsible for school supplies and, in some cases, a computer and internet. A Learning Coach at home, usually a parent, structures the day, monitors attendance, and supports the work.
ASU Prep Digital (K-12) is an accredited online school in the Arizona State University prep network. Its tuition page says full-time Arizona residents can attend at no cost to families, and that ASU Prep Digital covers up to two Arizona State University courses per semester for eligible high school students. Part-time enrollment and students outside the public charter path, including some ESA and homeschool arrangements, are pointed to ASU Prep Global Academy for tuition. Confirm which path you are on before you assume $0.
Arizona Virtual Academy (AZVA, K-12) is a tuition-free online public school for full-time Arizona residents. It uses the K12 platform, describes Arizona-certified teachers, and says it is Cognia-accredited and approved by the Arizona State Board for Charter Schools. This is the in-state K12 / Stride public option, which is separate from K12 Private Academy.
Primavera (K-12) describes a tuition-free online school with elementary, middle, and high school programs plus credit recovery. The school says classes stay fully online, and flexibility means more of the day is independent.
Unbound Academy (grades 4-8) is a tuition-free virtual charter. The school describes core academics in a morning block of about two hours on an AI-personalized plan, with certified teachers on screen, then afternoon workshops, and a day that runs about 8 AM to 2 PM. Its site makes strong learning-speed claims based on its own MAP data, which no independent evaluation has checked yet.
Best for: Families who want $0 public online school, statewide access, and a public diploma path.
Tradeoff: Ask how much of each day is live and what the school expects from parents. In the larger programs, a Learning Coach at home is part of the model, and there's less daily time in one small, steady group.
Online private school vs virtual public school explains the two categories, including how Recess compares with K12 and Connections Academy nationally.
Alpha School in Arizona
Alpha School's Arizona program is a campus. Alpha Scottsdale, at 20624 N 76th St, presents itself as a K-8 private school and publishes tuition of $40,000 on its campus page (as of September 2026). The model is a short block of adaptive academics and human Guides for the rest of the day. Alpha's FAQ says enrollment in Alpha Anywhere, its remote program, is paused through the end of 2026, so choosing Alpha in Arizona means choosing the Scottsdale campus. AI-forward schools are compared in online school with an AI tutor and live teachers.
ESA programs in other states
Other states run their own ESA and scholarship programs, and the rules differ. Some pay online private school tuition, some require an in-state campus, and award amounts vary by state, grade and student. Check your state's program administrator before you count on funding, and see ESA funding by state for the programs Recess works with.
