An Empowerment Scholarship Account uses state education funding to help eligible Arizona families pay for approved learning expenses.
Know what funding can cover.
Approved expenses can include curriculum, tutoring, educational materials, and tuition or fees for nonpublic online learning. Each purchase must meet ESA rules. Your actual award and approved expenses are determined by ADE.
Gather documents. Apply with the state.
Start with your child’s birth certificate and accepted proof of Arizona residency. Submit personal documents only through the official state process. Applications are accepted year-round; funding starts in the quarter you sign the contract.
About the “$8,000+” example
The funding chart linked by ADE on September 23, 2026 is labeled 2025–26. It estimates $7,105–$10,540 for grades 1–12 without disabilities and $4,718–$6,205 for kindergarten. Some awards exceed $8,000; others do not. These are prior-year estimates, not a promise of your 2026–27 award or the amount remaining this year.

Does this form sign us up for ESA or enroll us in Recess?
No. This is a Recess Academy guide request. Applying to the state, accepting an ESA contract, and enrolling in a school are separate decisions. The optional checkbox only asks us to email you Academy information. Recess Academy is not affiliated with the Arizona Department of Education (ADE).
What am I agreeing to when I accept an ESA?
You enter a contract with ADE and take responsibility for your child’s education outside the usual publicly funded district or charter enrollment. You must spend a portion of your ESA funds each year on education in reading, grammar, math, social studies and science, following the permitted-expense rules. Review the complete contract before accepting it.
Is learning at home with ESA the same as legally homeschooling?
You can learn at home in either case, but Arizona law treats them differently. Homeschooling under a county affidavit and education through an ESA contract are separate categories. An ESA contract satisfies the state’s school-attendance requirement; it does not require enrollment in a private school.
Do I file a homeschool affidavit? What if I already have one?
ESA participants should not file an affidavit of intent to homeschool. If one is already on file, ADE directs you to your county school superintendent for withdrawal instructions. Maricopa County requires notice within 30 days after homeschooling ends and offers a withdrawal form; use your own county’s process.

When do we have to withdraw from public school?
You can apply before withdrawing. Current Arizona law allows withdrawal before ESA money is received, while ADE’s public FAQ says students must be withdrawn when the contract is signed. Confirm the timing in your current contract with ADE and coordinate the withdrawal date with your school. Applying alone does not withdraw your child. Keep written confirmation and an education plan for the transition.
Can we keep a public online school, individual classes or activities?
Public online schools count as public schools. Ordinary publicly funded enrollment generally cannot overlap with ESA participation. State law does allow purchasing some public-school services, including individual classes and extracurricular programs. Ask ADE and the school to confirm an eligible paid arrangement before participating.
Who can apply, and what documents will we need?
For the universal K–12 category, the student and legal parent or guardian must live in Arizona. Entering kindergarteners must be five by January 1 of the contract year. Start with the student’s birth certificate, accepted residency proof and any legal-parent or guardian documentation ADE requires. Other eligibility categories may have additional requirements.
Do I have to teach every subject myself?
No. ESA can support approved curriculum, tutors, private schooling and nonpublic online learning. You choose how to arrange the education and remain responsible for meeting the contract’s requirements. Receiving an award does not automatically assign a school, teacher or curriculum.
Is it cash we can spend freely? What paperwork is involved?
ESA funds are restricted to approved education expenses and are managed through ClassWallet. Keep itemized invoices, receipts and any required supporting curriculum or provider information. Follow the current submission deadlines and ask ADE about uncertain purchases before paying. Disallowed spending can require repayment.
Can we also use a tax-credit scholarship?
An ESA student cannot receive a School Tuition Organization (STO) tax-credit scholarship concurrently with ESA in the same contract year. If your child already has one, ask ADE and the scholarship organization how to transition before accepting ESA.
What if we decide to return to public school?
Coordinate ending ESA participation with ADE before resuming ordinary public-school enrollment. Request closure through the ESA portal or ADE support, and keep the confirmation. Outstanding spending records still need to be submitted; remaining funds are returned to the state after closure and review. A future return to ESA requires a new application.
Do we need to renew each year?
Yes. ESA requires annual renewal. Watch for ADE’s renewal instructions and document requests; a previous award does not replace the next year’s contract.
