SUMMER MATH · CATCH UP

A summer
of closed
gaps.

Summer is when most kids fall further behind. It's also the rare stretch where the gap actually closes - because nothing is racing past, no grades, no clock. Just space to teach what was missing.

Twelve focused weeks. 3rd grade through college-level math. Built for kids who started the year strong and got lost - or who never quite caught up to begin with.

Just 30 minutes a day.

A weekly session with your tutor. Cancel any week, no annual commitment.

The gap doesn't close itself.

By the time math feels hard, the actual missing piece is usually a grade or two back. Summer is when you get to go find it - without a class moving on without you.

01 GAPS
Most math problems aren't this year's problem.

If long division feels broken in Grade 5, the actual gap is usually fractions in Grade 4 - or multiplication facts in Grade 3. Catch-up isn't reviewing the latest chapter; it's finding the load-bearing piece that came loose.

02 PACING
Group classes can't slow down for your kid.

Tutoring centers run the same curriculum at the same pace as school - which, if that's what wasn't working, won't fix it. The summer fix isn't more reps. It's the right reps, in the right place, with a person who can see what's missing.

03 SEPTEMBER
The cost of doing nothing is real.

Kids lose around 30% of their math skills over a typical summer. For a kid already behind, that's catastrophic - and there's no curriculum waiting to slow down for them in the fall. Summer is the window where the next year is decided.

02

What twelve weeks can do.

Four students from this past spring. The first started below grade level and finished above it - the kind of swing parents stop expecting after a tough year. The others show the range of what twelve focused weeks does for kids at every level.

GRADE 5 ~5.25× growth
Walked in behind. Walked out ahead.

Started the spring below grade-level math. Twelve weeks of weekly sessions, working through what was actually broken instead of marching through what came next. Finished the season above grade level - the biggest gain of the group.

GRADE 9 ~2.5× growth
Real growth where the curve goes flat.

By Grade 9, typical seasonal growth slows to a crawl. This student moved from the 70th to the 73rd percentile in a single spring - two-and-a-half times the typical pace, in the window where most students barely budge.

GRADE 4 ~2.67× growth
Already ahead. Pulled further away.

Started at the 90th percentile, finished at the 96th - more than two-and-a-half times faster than the typical Grade 4 student. The kind of acceleration advanced kids almost never get in a group setting.

GRADE 6 ~2.75× growth
Already at the ceiling. Still climbing.

Entered the spring at the 99th percentile and stayed there - a flat line at the top of the parent-portal chart all season. Underneath, growth ran nearly three times the typical pace.

03

Four things every summer student gets.

The Recess Academy approach to math, run as a focused summer program - mastery-based, paced to the kid, taught by a tutor who stays with them all summer.

FOCUS
One student at a time.

Your child has the tutor's full attention for the whole session - the work paced to the depth and speed they're actually ready for, not a grade-level default.

MASTERY
Built around what's actually missing.

We start by mapping where the gaps live - not where the grade-level template says they should be. From there we work toward real understanding, not memorized procedures.

MENTOR
A tutor who actually knows your kid.

One adult who gets to know your kid - how they think, where they get stuck, what makes a session land. The relationship is the work.

PARENTS
You hear what's happening.

A regular update on what your child worked on, where they've grown, and what comes next - so the rest of the summer at home can build on what's happening in session.

60-minute session with your tutor, once a week

Live with a Recess tutor on Open School. We work through the math your child is actually stuck on, build the next piece, and assign light practice for the week between sessions.

02
Diagnostic before the first session

We map the actual gaps - where the load-bearing concept came loose - before we start. The first session works on the thing that matters most, not the next chapter the curriculum was on.

03
Weekly recap to the parent

What we worked on, where they've improved, and what's next. So you're not guessing at progress, and the conversation at the kitchen table has somewhere to land.

05

Twelve weeks. Real ground.

Summer goes fast. Starting in the first week or two gives your kid enough sessions for the math to actually move - and gives the tutor enough time to find where the gaps really are before September.
