A LETTER FROM BEN SOMERS

I was maxed out
on Concerta by tenth grade.
1:1 is what actually worked.

If your kid is on stimulants and you've been quietly wondering whether they're really helping, you and I have something in common. Mine helped me sit still. They didn't help me learn. The thing that did was getting pulled out of class for 1:1 instruction. From there: Northwestern, a couple of prestigious jobs, and now this school. Recess Academy is the same intervention, scaled.

If you have one of these kids, you already know the shape of it. The one who can't sit still. The one whose brain locks onto the wrong thing and won't be pulled off. The one who comes home with "doesn't apply himself" written on a report card by a teacher who has never actually known him. The one for whom every accommodation, every break, every quiet desk is its own small fight.

Stimulants helped me sit still. They didn't help me learn. What helped me learn was a single adult, one period a day, who actually knew my brain and worked with it instead of against it. That's the most replicable result in education research. Bloom showed it forty years ago. The only thing schools have a hard time with is delivering it at scale.

The system asked me to conform.
This one is built to fit.

Recess Academy is a team of educators who get it. Many of us were diagnosed with ADHD ourselves. All of us have spent our careers around the kids the system tries to flatten. We deliver mastery-based progression in small group cohorts, 1:1 support when your child needs it, a mentor who stays with them for years, and a daily rhythm built around how your kid's brain actually works.

Your child is going to be okay. Better than okay. Come talk to us.
