Book Club

A place to read and discuss some of the world's greatest books

Art, Writing & Discussions
Organized by Recess

Hosted by 1 expert guide

What You'll Do

  • Join a group of kids your age (10-12 or 13-16) and meet once a week for an hour
  • Read one book over 4-6 weeks with a set number of chapters to finish before each meeting
  • Discuss characters, choices, and big ideas in breakout rooms
  • Occasionally participate in weekly activities and games related to the book
  • Start a brand new book together after the last one finishes

What You'll Practice

  • Reading Comprehension: Following plot, tracking characters, and remembering key details
  • Critical Thinking: Finding themes, asking questions, and backing up ideas with evidence from the book
  • Communication: Sharing your opinions, listening to others, and disagreeing respectfully

What You'll Need

  • A computer with a working microphone and camera
  • A copy of the current book (print, ebook, or audiobook all work). If you're in Recess Academy you'll have access to the book on the Recess App.
  • About 1-2 hours a week to read the assigned chapters
  • Reading starts before the first meeting. Your guide will post the chapters to read in the cohort chat.

Why Join a Book Club?

Reading alone is great, but reading with friends is better! When you talk about a book in a group setting you notice things you missed, hear ideas you never thought of, and remember the story long after you finish it.

What We're Reading

Every new book is a fresh start, so you can join at the beginning of any book. Late registrations are not permitted. To see the books we're current reading, check the cohort names below.

We'll announce when we're starting a new book the week before. You'll see this announcement in Recess chat and on the Feed.
